Garden Gate Study Club members met in Baldwin Park Monday, January 27, to observe Arbor Day by planting a Vitex tree. Charlotte Little, Arbor Day Chairman, presented a program dedicating the tree in memory of GGSC member, Vina Sue Fain.
Garden Gate Study Club’s “Plant it Pink” chairman, Jan C. Smith, initiated the creation of a new flower bed featuring pink dianthus and snap dragons along Civitan Park’s walking trail. “Plant it Pink” is a program of National Garden Clubs to encourage local garden clubs to participate in National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. GGSC President, Tami Boyd, Vice President, Heather Carroll, club member Marguerete McLemore and local home schoolers helped Jan with the plantings.
"Baldwin Park improvement is Garden Gate Study Club’s fall project. We got a great start today with help from the town crew, guys from Redemption House Ministries and Garden Gate club members. Our club purchased three park benches and placed them around the plantings by the wind mill. We also reclaimed flagstone walkways. Workers from Redemption House Ministries trimmed shrubbery, and cleared undergrowth from pine trees near the walking trial by Baldwin Park. The town crew removed dead trees and hauled off limbs and bags of clippings. It was a great group effort and we appreciate all who helped get this work done. It takes a village!!"

GGSC and FORT SCHOOL RECIPIENT OF ESPOMA ‘PLANT AMERICA’ GRANT
Through a partnership with Garden Gate Study Club, Fort Necessity Junior High was awarded an Espoma ‘Plant America’ Grant by National Garden Clubs, Inc. and the Espoma Company of Millville, New Jersey.
The $250 grant provided funding for organic products for a butterfly/pollinator garden at the school. The garden not only beautifies the campus but is also used for teaching and learning activities as well as providing habitat for pollinators.
The Espoma ‘Plant America” grant provides for Espoma materials such as organic insect spray, organic starter plant food and organic garden soil to be provided to productive NGC clubs to beautify their surroundings and improve the quality of life for their communities.
Fort Junior High and Garden Gate were privileged to be one of 20 recipients nationwide of the 2019 Espoma ‘Plant America’ grants. The organic products were received by Kay Payne, Project Manager, in September 2019 for inclusion in the butterfly/pollinator garden at the school.
NGC and the Espoma Company formed a partnership in 2017 to offer grant opportunities for up to 20 garden clubs nationwide to be receive grants of $250 of Espoma products annually. Since that time over 30 grants have been awarded to garden clubs in 22 states.
The Espoma Company is an environmentally conscious company that offers over 70 organic garden products including organic fertilizer and potting soils. Its manufacturing facility is 100% powered with solar energy reducing as much CO2 annually as planting two million trees.

GGSC and FORT SCHOOL RECIPIENT OF NGC PLANT AMERICA GRANT
Fort Necessity Junior High was the recipient of a 2019 $1000 PLANT AMERICA community project grant through a partnership with Garden Gate Study Club. National Garden Clubs, Inc. has established a new grant program to provide funding for new or existing projects of NGC member clubs in their respective communities across the United States. The grant covers any and every aspect of gardening: horticulture, garden design and community service. It applies to every kind of garden: Blue Star plantings, vegetable gardens, community gardens, school gardens, container gardening, neighborhood plantings, urban farms and low-water xeriscape gardens.
GGSC’s project at the Fort School was one of only four 2019 grants funded in Louisiana by National Garden Clubs, Inc. The grant funds were used to develop and expand a butterfly/pollinator garden on the Fort Junior High campus. The garden will provide an outdoor learning environment as well as providing an attractive area for students, teachers and visitors to enjoy.
Grant funds were utilized to restore and refurbish the existing butterfly garden at the school. Invasive plants, weeds and grass were removed, existing plants were repositioned or pruned and enhanced, and new pollinator plants were purchased and planted. Mulch was purchased and placed on site to improve the garden’s appearance and to impede the growth of weeds and grass.
The butterfly/pollinator garden project at the Fort School was the brainchild of a student’s grandmother, Kay Payne and elementary teacher, Rose Robbins. Members of GGSC were contacted concerning the possibility of partnering with the school as Garden Gate Study Club is committed to participation in environmentally-friendly projects in partnership with community volunteers. With the enthusiastic, positive response of the garden club members an application for the Plant America grant was made on behalf of the school’s butterfly/pollinator garden. The Plant America grant has made it possible to upgrade a valuable teaching tool and provide an aesthetically pleasing garden environment for students and staff at the school.

Roadside Beautification Project: Baldwin Park
GGSC members donated time and money to help Curtis Hilbun with the Windmill Bed at Baldwin Park. The beautiful tulips faded and sun patiens and coleus were added for a colorful summer diplay. The sun patiens and coleus were deadheaded as summer wore on and watered daily. This beautiful display surely enhances the Blue Star Marker nearby.
